PROGRAMMA
————————
James Joyce’s tale The Dead (in this case, Andrea Bosca’s stage version of it) speaks of ideal love and of destinies: Gabriel’s common and, if you like, banal love, and Michael’s heroic and sublime love. They are set against the Sonata in A Major for Piano and Violin by César Franck, which he composed as a wedding gift for his close friend, the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. This is a work of French chamber music, which was soon celebrated as the most successful example of that genre, so much so that it has been defined as a sort of “Cartesian work” because of its structural clarity and the infallible balance that underpins the dialogue between the two instruments.
